The Right Order: How to Layer Your Skincare Products for Maximum Results

The Right Order: How to Layer Your Skincare Products for Maximum Results

The Correct Order — Step by Step
1. Cleanser
Always start with a clean canvas. Use a gentle cleanser morning and night to remove makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, and impurities.
2. Toner
Toners help rebalance your skin’s pH after cleansing and prep your skin to better absorb what comes next. Apply with clean hands or a cotton pad.
3. Serums & Treatments
This is where the real actives live — vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinol. Because serums are lightweight and concentrated, they need to go on before heavier products so they can penetrate the skin effectively. If you’re using more than one serum, apply the thinnest first.
4. Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is delicate and thinner than the rest of your face. Apply eye cream with your ring finger using a gentle tapping motion.
5. Moisturizer
Moisturizer seals in everything you’ve applied and keeps your skin barrier hydrated and healthy. Choose one suited to your skin type — lightweight gel for oily skin, richer cream for dry skin.
6. Face Oil (if using)
Oils are occlusive, meaning they form a barrier on top of the skin. Always apply after moisturizer so they lock everything in rather than block absorption.
7. SPF (morning only)
Sunscreen is the last step in your morning routine and the most important one for preventing premature aging and sun damage. Apply generously and don’t skip it — even on cloudy days.

A Note on Night Routines
Your nighttime routine follows the same order, just skip the SPF. Night is also the best time to use actives like retinol or exfoliating acids, since your skin is in repair mode while you sleep.

The Bottom Line
Getting your layering order right doesn’t have to be complicated. Cleanse, tone, treat, moisturize, protect — and your skin will thank you. When in doubt, thinnest to thickest is your best guide.
