Kate's Top 5 Secrets for Glowing Skin After 40
I've spent years helping women transform their skin, and in that time I've noticed a pattern. The clients who get the most dramatic results — the ones who come in looking tired and leave looking like themselves again, just brighter and firmer — aren't necessarily using the most expensive products or the most complex routines.
They're doing a handful of specific things consistently. And most of them are simpler than you'd expect.
Here are the five things I recommend to every client over 40 who wants genuinely glowing skin.
Secret #1: Exfoliate — But Less Than You Think
After 40, your skin's natural cell turnover rate has slowed significantly. Dead skin cells linger on the surface longer than they used to, creating the dullness and rough texture that make skin look tired even when you're well-rested.
The fix is exfoliation. But here's where most women go wrong: they exfoliate too often, assuming more is better. Over-exfoliation strips your skin barrier, causes inflammation, and actually accelerates visible aging over time.
The sweet spot is 2–3 times per week with a well-formulated glycolic acid product. That's enough to keep cell turnover moving without compromising your barrier. Your skin should feel smoother and look brighter — not tight, red, or sensitive.
Secret #2: Treat Your Neck and Chest Like Your Face
This is the one that surprises people most — and the one they're almost always grateful they started. Your neck and décolletage are often more revealing of your age than your face, partly because most women stop their skincare routine at the jawline.
Whatever you're applying to your face — serum, exfoliant, moisturizer — bring it down to your neck and chest. The skin there is thinner and more prone to crepiness, horizontal lines, and sun damage. Treating it with the same care you give your face makes an enormous cumulative difference.
Secret #3: Add a Weekly Masking Ritual
Sheet masks get dismissed as indulgent or gimmicky, but a well-formulated mask delivers a concentrated dose of active ingredients in a way that daily products simply can't replicate. The occlusive layer traps ingredients against your skin for 15–20 minutes, dramatically improving absorption.
I recommend making one evening a week your "mask night" — treat it as non-negotiable self-care. The ritual itself has value: lower cortisol, a few minutes of stillness. And the skin results are real. Clients consistently tell me that their mask nights are when they notice the most immediate "wow" effect.
Secret #4: Switch to a Richer Cleanser (Seriously)
This sounds almost too simple, but I've seen it change skin overnight. Most women in their 40s are still using the same foaming or gel cleansers they used in their 20s — formulas designed for younger, oilier skin.
As you age, your skin produces less oil and retains moisture less efficiently. A stripping cleanser removes the oils your skin is working hard to hold onto, leaving it tight, dull, and more prone to irritation. Switching to a creamy, gentle cleanser is one of the fastest ways to improve your skin's baseline hydration and texture.
If your skin feels "squeaky clean" after washing, that's not freshness — it's your barrier being stripped. It should feel clean and comfortable, nothing more.
Secret #5: Protect Your Investment With SPF — Every Single Day
I saved this for last because I want it to land with full weight: everything else you do for your skin is undermined if you're not wearing SPF every day.
Up to 90% of visible skin aging — the wrinkles, the dark spots, the loss of elasticity, the uneven tone — is caused by cumulative UV exposure, not chronological aging. This means that driving to work, sitting near a window, spending 20 minutes outside: it all adds up, every single day, whether or not it feels sunny.
UVA rays (the ones that cause aging, not burning) penetrate glass. They are present year-round. They don't feel like anything on your skin. And they are relentlessly at work every time you're near a window or outdoors.
SPF is the single highest-return investment in your skincare routine. It doesn't just prevent future damage — it also allows everything else you're doing to actually work, because you're not undoing your progress every morning.
Bonus: The One Thing That Ties It All Together
Consistency. I know — not the exciting answer. But the single biggest difference between clients whose skin transforms and clients who don't see results is how regularly they show up for their routine.
You don't need a 10-step routine. A well-chosen 4-step routine done every day will outperform an elaborate routine done sporadically, every single time. The ingredients work through cumulative exposure. Give them the chance to do their job.
