SPF Every Day: Why Sunscreen Is the #1 Anti-Aging Product You’re Probably Skipping

Posted by Kate Jaksik on

If you could only use one skincare product for the rest of your life, dermatologists would almost universally say the same thing: sunscreen. It outperforms serums, retinols, and expensive creams when it comes to preventing premature aging. And yet it’s still the most skipped step in most people’s routines. Here’s why that needs to change.
Why Sunscreen Is an Anti-Aging Essential
Up to 90% of visible skin aging — think fine lines, dark spots, uneven texture, and loss of firmness — is caused by UV exposure, not the natural aging process. This is called photoaging, and it happens even on cloudy days, even through windows, and even when you don’t feel the sun on your skin.
Sunscreen is the single most effective way to slow it down.

UVA vs. UVB: What’s the Difference?
• UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. They’re strongest in summer and peak midday.
• UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are present year-round, at equal intensity throughout the day. They’re the primary driver of premature aging and can pass through glass.
You need a broad-spectrum SPF that protects against both.

How Much SPF Do You Actually Need?
For daily use, SPF 30 is the minimum — it blocks about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks about 98%. The difference sounds small, but for everyday protection SPF 30 applied correctly and consistently is far better than SPF 50 applied sporadically.
The key word is applied correctly — most people use far less sunscreen than needed. For your face alone, you need about a nickel-sized amount, or roughly ¼ teaspoon.
Common Sunscreen Myths — Debunked
“I don’t need it on cloudy days.”
Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds. Cloudy days are not safe days.
“My foundation has SPF so I’m covered.”
The amount of SPF in makeup is rarely enough for real protection. You’d need to apply far more than anyone actually does.
“I only need it in summer.”
UVA rays are consistent year-round. Winter sun — especially with snow reflection — can be just as damaging.
“I have darker skin so I don’t need SPF.”
Melanin does offer some natural protection, but not enough. People of all skin tones are susceptible to photoaging and skin cancer.

How to Make Sunscreen a Habit
• Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, after moisturizer
• Keep a bottle somewhere visible so you don’t forget
• Reapply every two hours if you’re spending time outdoors
• Find a formula you actually enjoy — there are lightweight, non-greasy, and tinted options that feel great on the skin
The Bottom Line
No serum, cream, or treatment can undo what consistent sun exposure does to your skin over time. Sunscreen is not optional — it’s the foundation of any serious skincare routine. Start today, and your future self will thank you.
